International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge paid a visit to the ITF/FTB East Africa Training Centre in Burundi on Friday. The centre, which is based in Bujumbura, is home to eight players who also train there on a full-time basis.

“The ITF project is a wonderful example of Olympic Solidarity support,” said IOC Olympic Solidarity general manager Pere Miro, who accompanied Rogge and a host of IOC members on the trip. “This help can take tennis to every country, build bridges and bring players from warring communities together.”

The players based at the Burundi training centre will be hoping to be recommended for the Olympic Scholarship programme, which was established to assist athletes who have been nominated by their respective federations and NOCs in preparation for future Olympic Games and, in particular, the Youth Olympic Games.

The ITF will recommend talented East African players to be considered for the scholarship programme and helps in the assessment of applications.
